It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Men of the North’s founder and Chairman, Bert Doherty, in September 2014.
In November 2000, Bert and his partner Ian, began a small, monthly night, aimed towards older gay men and others, who felt that the mainstream gay scene in Belfast didn’t have anything to offer them.
MOTN has grown to encompass many of the alternative gay identities, including the leather and bear communities, offering a place where men could express themselves openly.
We have hosted bear weekends, leather events, rugby nights, trips to other cities, quiz nights, international guest DJs and many, many other events. From that humble beginning upstairs in Whites Tavern, Men of the North has gone on to become the longest-running men-only night in Northern Ireland.
From the beginning, Bert was the driving force behind Men of the North. Always happy to chat to newcomers and regulars alike, he went out of his way to speak to everyone and make them feel welcome. He put his heart and soul into making MOTN a success. He was a lovely, warm and funny person who will be greatly missed by all knew him, both personally and professionally.
